No Tar Sands: Attend Short Training - Nov. 20

DEAR_LIZ_edited-5.jpg

Do you want to stop tar sands from coming to the Bay Area? We have a unique opportunity to influence a key decision maker by attending two Palo Alto City Council meetings on Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 (both start at 6pm).

We are holding a short training session on Nov. 20th at 7:30 p.m. to help speakers and supportive audience members get up to speed on the issues and coordinate our message. Please let us know if you are interested and able to make either of the Palo Alto City Council meetings. The address for the training will provided after you RSVP on this page.

The details:
We are trying to influence Liz Kniss, Vice Mayor of Palo Alto, who is Chair of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD). The BAAQMD is responsible for regulating air pollution, including GHGs, in the entire Bay Area.  At their December 6 meeting in San Francisco they will be considering rules on permits for new facilities that emit global warming and toxic gasses, as well as particulate pollution. Strong rules will stop GHG increases, preventing tar sands from being refined in the Bay Area.

Should they fail to regulate these facilities adequately we will likely begin refining tar sands, the dirtiest oil on earth, right here in the Bay Area.

These rules offer the opportunity for the BAAQMD to deliver on its commitments to protect air quality and prevent the worst consequences of global warming caused by carbon dioxide and other emissions.

We'll urge Liz to use her leadership role on the BAAQMD to get strong permit rules passed, and close off another avenue for tar sands. Your presence can make a difference.
