Non-Violent Civil Disobedience Training, April 5th, 1-6pm

Please join over 90,000 people nationwide in resistance to the Keystone XL Pipeline. In order to take part in the nonviolent civil disobedience in San José, we must attend a mandatory training. This will be the last training offered before the Sit In!  (More info on the Sit In below.)

Please visit CREDO's RSVP page to sign the Pledge of Resistance: www.nokxl.org

More information:
We are partnering with CREDO and Rainforest Action Network to organize a mass civil disobedience action shortly after the State Department publishes its report. Over 90,000 people nationwide have pledged to resist in over 100 US cities, including a local one right here in San Jose.
The action will only be triggered IF the State Department recommends that the President approves the pipeline. It will be our last resort to convince the President to reject it.

THE SIT IN:
There will be two simultaneous events:

  1. A Sit In at the Federal Building in San Jose. The Sit In will be a civil disobedience action where participants will be risking arrest, to show that if the government won't protect the climate, we the people must break the law to do what's right, like the civil rights movement and Gandhi did before us.  Watch this YouTube video for a model Sit In event in Chicago last year.
  2. A support rally, separate and completely legal for those who would like to participate but do not want to risk arrest. The support rally will take place across the street from the sit in.
When: the exact date for the Sit In is not set yet, it will depend on when the State Department's releases the National Interest Determination, but we expect the event to take place in late April or early May.
Why civil disobedience? Faced with the failure of our Federal government to control climate change, the climate movement is turning to mass civil disobedience to assert our right and responsibility to protect the "public trust" of a stable climate. Civil disobedience challenges the legitimacy of corporate control over our government which perpetuates climate destruction under the color of the law. This is argued forcefully by Jeremy Brecher in a recent Op-Ed in Foreign Policy in Focus: Climate Protection: The New Insurgency.
