San José Faith and Community Groups Join Nationwide Sun Day Mobilization to Celebrate Clean Energy Revolution
From Coast to Coast: Thousands Unite to Demonstrate that Clean Energy is Ready Now
San José, CA – On Sunday, September 21, 2025, Indivisible, GreenFaith, 350 Silicon Valley, Acterra, the First Unitarian Church of San José, and a broad coalition of community and faith partners will join communities across the country for Sun Day, a groundbreaking nationwide mobilization marking a pivotal moment in America’s clean energy transformation. Spearheaded by renowned environmental activist Bill McKibben, Sun Day will feature more than 400 events in 47 states across the country, creating a powerful, coordinated day of action spotlighting the most significant energy revolution of our time.
As part of this national movement, San José will host a family-friendly march and picnic to showcase local commitment to solar and wind power. Participants will gather at the Unitarian Universalist Church of San José at 12:30 PM, march to City Hall, and then enjoy a community picnic at St. James Park. The celebration will feature music and messages from diverse faith and community leaders, highlighting that clean energy isn’t a far-off dream—it’s powering our lives right now.
“For decades we’ve called this stuff ‘alternative energy.’ We want to drive home the point that that’s not true any more—this is the straightforward, common-sense, obvious way to power our future, the cheapest way to drive down electric prices, the easiest way to build a working America,” said Bill McKibben, the driving force behind Sun Day and co-founder of 350.org.
Local leaders agree. “Here in San José, we know that solar and wind are already transforming our communities,” said Rev. Matthew McHale, Minister at the Unitarian
Universalist Church of San José. “Sun Day is about celebrating the courage and collective action it takes to build a healthier, and more just future for our families and neighborhoods.”
Highlights of the San José Sun Day March and Picnic:
Family-friendly march from the Unitarian Universalist Church of San José to City Hall.
Community picnic at St. James Park with music and activities for all ages.
Interfaith voices and local leaders sharing why clean energy is a moral, spiritual, and practical imperative.
Celebration of solar and wind power as the fastest-growing, cheapest sources of energy in history.
Organized in partnership with: Acterra, Breathe California, 350 Silicon Valley, The Climate Reality Project Silicon Valley Chapter, Climate Action California, Indivisible Silicon Valley, Mothers Out Front Silicon Valley, Citizens Climate Lobby San Mateo and Silicon Valley North, Solidarity and Unity Network, Third Act Bay Area, California Interfaith Power & Light, GreenFaith, First Unitarian Church of San José, YIMBY Action and Climate Resilient Communities.
The San José event is part of the national Sun Day movement demonstrating that clean energy technologies are affordable, reliable, and ready to deploy at scale. In 2024 alone, the U.S. added 50 gigawatts of solar power to the grid—the most any energy source has added in two decades—enough to power 8.5 million homes.
Sun Day aims to demonstrate public support for accelerating the transition to clean and inexpensive renewable energy. Organizers emphasize that the biggest barrier to clean energy is political, not technological.
